Working Cats for your Home or Business

Home / Adopt / Working Cats for your Home or Business

Grand Strand Humane Society has a program that allows cats that are not suitable for a normal indoor home environment to put their skills to work for you outdoors providing pest control in your garage, barn, stable, warehouse or other safe outdoor location. Your working cat will keep rodents under control, eliminating the need for outdoor chemical treatments that may be harmful to the environment and dangerous to pets, wildlife and children.  Working cats may or may not allow human contact and can live mainly outdoors; however, they will need a safe, covered area like a garage, barn, stable or other outdoor building to sleep in and allow them to escape from predators and inclement weather. You will need to provide food and fresh water daily, as they cannot survive on eating rodents alone. You will also be responsible for any future veterinary care, which should include regular checkups and flea preventative.

The Working Cats in our program are spayed or neutered, micro chipped, vaccinated, FeLV/FIV tested, and ear-tipped (under anesthesia our veterinarian will notch an ear tip, the widely recognized sign that a feral cat is altered) at no fee to qualified adopters.

There will be special instructions and a 2-4 week transitional period for the Working Cat program to be successful for potential adopters. These instructions will ensure the best chance of the cats living a healthy and successful life as an outdoor cat.

By undertaking this commitment you are saving the life of a cat that cannot be adopted to live in a regular home. Your adoption also alleviates pressure on crowded animal shelters.
